About Sango

Akira Izushima opened the first Sango restaurant in Los Alamitos, CA in 1986.  The original concept for Sango remains the same today: to provide high quality food and excellent service.  That concept has served Sango well.  Two more Sango restaurants followed Los Alamitos, one in Laguna Niguel and another in Huntington Beach, CA.

Akira Iizushima first visited America in 1976 when he began working as dining chef at Koto restaurant in Newport Beach, CA.  Previously he worked at Midori restaurant in Yokohama City in Japan for four years.  He is a graduate of Tokyo Musashino Cooking School in Japan.

Akira joined Matsu restaurant in Huntington Beach, CA in 1982 as the head chef and later worked as a sushi chef.

After spending four years at Matsu, Akira opened Sango, which means "coral" in Japanese.  His long-time associate, executive chef Hide Matsuzaki, has worked with Akira since 1987.

The Laguna Niguel restaurant, sometimes called "Sango South," opened in 1997.  This restaurant has seating for 30 persons.

Sango Huntington Beach opened in 2002 and also has seating for 30 customers.

Sango Los Alamitos was modified in July 2002, and now is the same floor plan as the other Sango restaurants.  The sushi bar seats are removed and the dining room menu was altered to match the other restaurants.

Akira hopes that the new affordable prices -- but same high-quality sushi -- will allow more people to try Japanese foods.  And, the lower prices allow Sango's regular customers the opportunity to visit Sango more often!
